Ingredients
For marinating fish:
  • 6 Mirga fish steaks cleaned (this will be 3 whole pieces of the centre of the fish, cut into half each to create 6 pieces)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp mixed curry powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp chilli powder (more if you like it spicy)
  • ½ tsp coriander powder (optional)
For sauteing onions:
  • oil
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 tomatoes (chopped into 4 pieces each)
  • ½ - 1 tsp salt (adjust to your taste)
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 5 green chillies sliced
  • coriander to garnish
Method
  1. Clean the Mirga fish steaks by removing any scales from the exterior. Rub the fish pieces with ½ tsp of salt and leave to soak in cold water till for at least 30 mins.
  2. Peel and finely slice 2 medium onions, cut 2 tomatoes (into quarters each), slice 5 green chillies and chop some coriander in the meantime.
  3. After 30 mins wash the fish pieces with running cold water, all the while massaging the fish to ensure they are thoroughly washed. Drain in a colander before commencing to add the spices.
  4. Add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp mixed curry powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp chilli powder and ½ tsp coriander powder to the fish steaks and massage well.
  5. In a wide frying pan heat some oil and fry the fish pieces till they are golden on one side, then turn over and fry till golden on the other side. Reserve on a plate once complete.
  6. In the same frying pan (you may add a little more oil if needed), add the onions along with salt to taste (1/2 - 1 tsp should be enough), saute for a few minutes until soft.
  7. Add ½ tsp of turmeric powder and fry for two more minutes to remove the rawness of the spice.
  8. Add the chopped tomatoes along with the fried fish steaks and fry for a further 2 - 3 minutes.
  9. Finish off by adding the sliced chillies and coriander and cooking for 1 more minute.
  10. Serve with plain rice and enjoy!
