Classic Tomato Salad

A very simple salad which needs a handful of ingredients and tastes great!

This Classic Tomato Salad is usually served alongside dishes such as Akhni Fulab and Classic Lamb & Potato Curry, it’s so easy to execute and doesn’t take long to prepare. A staple in Bengali households, mine included, it’s ideal for preparing when entertaining guests but is so versatile you can whip it up whenever you feel like it. I often make this when my curries are a day or two old, my kids will happily eat rice and curry when a fresh salad accompanies it. If you’ve never tried this, go and raid your fridge for the ingredients now and give it a try!

Serves 4 – 6 people

You will need: for Classic Tomato Salad

3 salad tomatoes
1 red onion (you may also use white)
2 – 3 green chillies (adjust to your preference)
handful of fresh coriander
salt to taste (I used about 1/4 tsp)

Method:

Classic Tomato Salad

The key to a flavoursome salad like this is to slice everything SUPER FINE, the finer the ingredients, the better the taste.

Start by finely slicing 3 salad tomatoes and 1 red onion.

Classic Tomato Salad

Slice 2 – 3 green chillies, then chop them until they look minced.

Finely chop a handful of coriander.

Place all the sliced/chopped ingredients into a small bowl, add salt (I used 1/4 of a tsp) and mix well using your hands. Be gentle but coat everything with salt.

This is my favourite salad to have with curry!

I also add roasted garlic and those little roasted chillis to this for extra flavour
